ROOTS & BRIDGES AWAKENED GEN Z’S POWER TO VOTE FOR DEMOCRACY’S VICTORY
A Workshop Uniquely Crafted to Educate Young First-time Voters
NEWARK, NJ. — Nov. 8, 2020 – Before we witnessed the victory of democracy,
Roots & Bridges, an education-focused organization in New Jersey, launched an online
voting workshop at 7 pm (EDT) Oct. 27th, 2020, a week before the election day. As an
organization that aims to equip people with the tools to advocate for social equality,
R&B designed this voter workshop to ignite and excite registered first-time voters to
actively engage in the democratic process.
Roots & Bridges’ CEO Shanell Dunns held the event with two other guest
speakers: A’Dorian Murray Thomas, the Founder and CEO of She Wins, Inc., and Kym
Gilchrist, the Founder and CEO of KunsultingKym LLC. They amplified why the teens
should vote, who should they vote for, how to vote, and the next step to take after
completing this workshop.
The discussion between Shanell and A’Dorian highlighted the importance of adults
transferring their power to the new generation. A’Dorian pointed out when adults were
having conversations about young people, it was usually about them, but not with them.
When it comes to vote, youths have the power to amplify their voice and effectuate
change.
Regarding the conversation between Kym and Shanell, they mentioned that the
impact of vote went beyond the presidential election. Because the funding was based
on our community, each person’s vote could save those who need social services, food,
and education. When thinking about who to vote for, Kym suggested the teens to write
down what they care about. For instance, home, education, job security. It is crucial to
elect people in the congress who are passionate about what we are passionate about.
“We have to get rid of the opinion that young people are the problem; instead, they
are the solution.” As A’Dorian and Shanell discussed, “ We have to do a better job to
ensure people know their voice matter.” Fortunately, the election result has revealed
that the youths are empowered to make an impact. After this workshop and the whole
election event, we believe they will be bolder in their future endeavors.
